STAT Success Cohort · Week 3 Pre-read

Jordan's case.

Read this before your Week 3 live session. Jordan's situation is different from Morgan's. Jordan has already fixed their methods. Something else is still missing.

Week 3 theme
Foundation repair, selective.

Some struggling students have a method problem. Others have a foundation problem. Many have both. Jordan is now past the method problem. What is left is harder to see and harder to name, which is why Week 3 dedicates a full case to it.

Meet Jordan

Jordan is a 20-year-old pre-nursing student at a community college, second semester of Anatomy and Physiology. They passed A&P 1 with a C-minus last semester. They are currently six weeks into A&P 2, which means they have taken three unit exams and two lab practicals so far.

Two weeks ago, Jordan worked through Morgan's case with their own team. The discussion hit home. Jordan realized their study methods were producing exactly the kind of "feels productive but does not retain" work the team had identified in Morgan. Since that session, Jordan has changed how they study. They have done real work on the methods.

And yet their grade has barely moved.

Jordan in their own words

Jordan's facilitator asked them to describe what has changed since working Morgan's case, and what is still not working.

Jordan, two weeks after Morgan's case

"I did the work. I stopped rereading. I got rid of the color-coded notes. I stopped watching videos on 1.5x speed like I could just absorb them. I bought a practice question bank and I actually use it. I self-test without notes in front of me. I went to office hours once. My study time went UP, not down, but it feels different now. More active. I can tell my brain is doing more work."

"And yet the exam last week was a 61. The one before was a 60. I thought I understood the material when I was studying. I did practice questions and got them right. Then I sat down for the exam and the questions were phrased differently, and I could not figure out how to apply what I knew."

"Here is what I noticed. When I try to explain the resting membrane potential out loud, I cannot do it. I can name the phases of an action potential. I can tell you sodium goes in and potassium goes out. But I cannot explain why. I do not understand what a concentration gradient really is. I do not understand what the sodium-potassium pump is actually doing at a deep level. It is like the professor is building a house and everyone else has the foundation already and I am standing on sand."

What Jordan changed, and what still is not working

Since Morgan's case two weeks ago, Jordan has made specific changes to how they study. Here is the before-and-after.

What Jordan has changed
  • Stopped rereading chapters
  • Stopped rewriting or color-coding notes
  • Uses practice question bank almost daily
  • Self-tests without notes in hand
  • Watches videos once at normal speed, takes retrieval notes after
  • Attended office hours once
  • Tries to explain concepts out loud while studying
What still is not working
  • Cannot explain core mechanisms when asked
  • Gets practice questions right but fails on exam variants
  • Understands while studying, forgets during exam
  • Cannot connect concepts across systems
  • Struggles with any question requiring integration
  • Feels "lost" in lecture within the first 15 minutes

The concepts Jordan has flagged as unclear

When Jordan's facilitator asked them to name specific things they do not understand, Jordan named these. Note that these are all foundational concepts, not current-unit material.

The teaching point of Jordan's case

Jordan fixed the method. The method was real. But Jordan also has foundational gaps from A&P 1 and chemistry that are blocking current material. No amount of good study method will help if the prerequisite understanding is missing. The work of Week 3 is learning to identify which foundation gaps are blocking current coursework and selectively repairing them. Not all of them. The ones that matter right now.

Before the live session

Same structure as Week 2. You do not need to solve Jordan's case before the session. Your team will work it out together. What you do need to do is read it carefully and think about it.

Come to the session with these three things in mind

What you will do in the session

Your team will work through three questions together, same structure as Morgan's case. What do we think is happening for Jordan. What should Jordan stop doing. What should Jordan start doing. Expect the discussion to get specific about which foundation concepts Jordan needs to repair first, and in what order. Bring your own list of foundational concepts you are uncertain about. You will use them this week.

Before the session

Read once for the story. Read again for the gaps.

15 to 20 minutes total. On the second reading, highlight the concepts Jordan names that feel uncertain for you too. You will bring that list to the team discussion.
