Big Picture

The female reproductive system has six major organs working together to produce gametes, host fertilization and pregnancy, and nourish a newborn. Each structure has a defined job. Learn the role first, then the anatomy makes sense.

The Six Organs of the Female Reproductive System

  1. Ovaries (gonads). Produce gametes (secondary oocytes) and hormones (estrogens, progesterone, inhibin, relaxin).
  2. Uterine (fallopian) tubes. Transport secondary oocytes from ovaries to uterus. Site of fertilization.
  3. Uterus. Site of implantation, fetal development, and labor.
  4. Vagina. Receptacle for the penis during intercourse, outlet for menstrual flow, and passageway for childbirth.
  5. External organs (vulva or pudendum). Protective structures and sensory organs for sexual response.
  6. Mammary glands. Synthesize, secrete, and eject milk for nourishment of the newborn.
Note: mammary glands belong to both the reproductive and integumentary systems. Keep that in mind when studying skin too.
